Typhoid Fever

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It spreads primarily through contaminated food and water and is more common in areas with poor sanitation. If not treated on time, typhoid can lead to severe complications.

Causes of Typhoid

Typhoid spreads when a person consumes food or water contaminated with the Salmonella typhi bacteria. The main sources of infection include:

  • Consuming contaminated food or drinks
  • Poor hygiene and lack of handwashing
  • Drinking untreated or polluted water
  • Close contact with an infected person

Symptoms of Typhoid

Symptoms usually appear within 6 to 30 days after exposure to the bacteria. The most common signs include:

  • Persistent high fever (up to 104°F or 40°C)
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Abdominal pain and loss of appetite
  • Headache and body aches
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Skin rash with rose-colored spots (in some cases)

How to Prevent Typhoid?

Prevention is the best way to stay safe from typhoid. Follow these simple steps:

  • Drink Safe Water: Always consume filtered, boiled, or bottled water.
  • Eat Hygienic Food: Avoid street food and eat freshly cooked meals.
  • Wash Hands Regularly: Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the restroom.
  • Get Vaccinated: Typhoid vaccines are available and highly recommended, especially before traveling to high-risk areas.

Treatment for Typhoid

Typhoid is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Along with medication, it’s important to:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking clean water and ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution)
  • Eat soft, easily digestible food like khichdi, soup, and fruits
  • Take proper rest to recover faster

Ignoring typhoid symptoms can lead to serious complications like intestinal perforation, internal bleeding, or even organ failure. If you experience any symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.
